A little bit about us.

It might surprise you to know that Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is the second largest fire service in the country. We cover an area of approximately 496 square miles, which contains over 2.5 million people, one million domestic properties and a wide range of commercial and industrial sites.

Within that area we have 41 stations. These are organised into eleven boroughs, each with a Borough Command Headquarters. The main Fire Service Headquarters is based at Swinton. You can find out the exact address of our Swinton Headquarters by going to Our Locations.

Around 2,400 people work in the service and 1,700 of those are operational firefighters. Our Work is extremely varied and includes everything from rescuing people at road traffic collisions to promoting fire safety within local schools. We also have over 400 non-uniformed staff. They provide a vital range of support services including human resources, finance, corporate communications, property management, fleet management and information technology.

It’s a real team effort. And together we respond to some 52,000 emergencies a year.
