Never a dull moment.

If you thought firefighters simply sat around drinking tea and playing pool while waiting for the alarm bell to ring, then you’re in for a bit of a shock.

When they’re not on a ‘shout’, or out promoting fire safety in the community, our firefighters are attending lectures, carrying out maintenance (on everything from their breathing apparatus to the ladders on the back of our fire engines) and taking part in a variety of drills to keep their skills sharp. Most stations will also have a gym. So when our teams get a spare moment they can work on maintaining their levels of fitness too.

We like to think there’s great camaraderie in each of our stations. And you’ll experience it the moment you join up with your first Watch. You’ll work with your team for, on average, two days and two nights a week. So in a sense they’ll become almost like a second family. And because you’ll be relying on each other in some pretty dangerous situations, you’ll quickly build up strong relationships that will last throughout your career.
