Making an application.

So, you’re thinking about joining us. Well, the details below should give you a good idea of what to expect from the application process. But before we get to them, it’s important to point out that there are some basic but essential standards that all our recruits must meet. These are:

  • You are 18 years of age.
  • You hold a full category 'B' (car) or equivalent driving licence.
  • Eligible to live and work in the UK (or if you are a commonwealth citizen or foreign national, is your stay in the UK free of restrictions?)
  • You will be required to pass certain rigorous physical and job related tests (such as working within confined spaces and at heights).
  • You will also be required to undergo stringent medical and eye examinations to make sure you're suitable to undertake arduous firefighting duties.
  • You must have good colour vision (as tested by Ishihara plates). Your eyesight will also be tested by a qualified ophthalmologist.

If after reading that you’re happy to proceed, great. The application process itself is outlined below.

First you’ll be asked to fill out a basic online application form.

Then, if your application is accepted, you’ll have a brief telephone interview.

Pass that, and you’ll be asked to complete a series of National Firefighter Ability tests (these are written papers testing you on the following areas: working with numbers; working with information; and problem solving).

After that, you’ll be invited to take the National Firefighter Selection physical tests. More information on how to get in shape for these tests can be found in our Fire Fitness section.

Then you’ll have a final interview.

Even if you pass that, a full offer will only be made once you’ve passed a medical, cleared a criminal record check, and provided suitable references.

It sounds tough, and it is. But at the end of the day we’re after people who can handle the challenge of fighting fires and saving lives. If you think you’re up to it, apply here. Good luck.
