Is firefighting for you?

A lot of people find the idea of being a firefighter quite attractive. We get thousands of applications every year for a relatively small amount of places. The trouble is, many people don’t take enough time to think about whether or not they’re truly suited to the role. And that can lead to disappointment when they discover it isn’t what they expected.

To find out whether or not you’re cut out for a career in the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, why not take a minute to consider the following questions? They’ll give you a good steer as to the range of qualities a modern firefighter needs.

  • Do you have the ability to relate to, and get on with, people from different backgrounds and cultures?
  • Could you remain calm and collected in pressurised situations?
  • Are you prepared to follow instructions from others?
  • Do you have the confidence to act on your own initiative?
  • Are you prepared to work unsociable hours, including night shifts, weekend work and public holidays?
  • Do you enjoy working as part of a team?
  • Are you committed to promoting the safety of your community?
  • Would you be able to deal sensitively with members of the public in difficult and emotional situations?
  • Are you prepared, at emergency incidents, to work for several hours in challenging conditions without a break?

If you’ve answered yes to all of the above, you could make a great firefighter. But the only way to find out for real is to apply. A word of warning though, our Application process is very thorough. To see it through you’ll need plenty of commitment and dedication. However, should you be accepted, the rewards of helping to keep your community safe from harm will make the effort more than worthwhile.
