Once you get through the application process you’ll begin your Initial training. This will help you develop all the skills you need to become a fully-fledged firefighter. But your learning won’t stop there. We’re constantly updating our training to ensure our firefighters are some of the best prepared in the country, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to build on your knowledge.

After you’ve gained some experience, you can take advantage of our Development opportunities and move up into team leadership, or try your hand at a non-operational role such as an trainer at the training centre or a community fire safety officer. Even if you decide you want to stay a firefighter, you can still broaden your expertise by specialising as a trauma technician or a rope access trainer, for example.

The opportunities are endless. However they won’t be handed to you on a plate. Yes, there’ll always be someone on hand to offer you advice and guidance. But ultimately it’ll be up to you to drive your own development.
